Samuel M. Austin, III


Sam joined NEPC in 2017, bringing over 29 years of investment experience to our firm. He is a member of the NEPC Impact Investing Committee.  Sam has extensive experience advising public funds on asset allocation, investment policy, risk budgeting, manager selection and trustee education.  For the five years prior to joining NEPC, Sam was Senior Vice President at FIS Group where, as a member of the Investment Committee, he advised some of the nation’s largest public funds on asset allocation and manager selection within their emerging manager programs.

Prior to FIS Group, Sam spent almost 10 years at Virtus Investment Partners where he advised institutional investors on the use of structured debt and liquid alternatives.  Sam was a member of the CEO’s Executive Committee, helping to plan and execute the successful spinout of the asset management arm of Phoenix Insurance into an independent publicly traded company.  Previously, Sam was a Principal and Team Leader at Barclays Global Investors, where he facilitated the implementation of risk budgeting and asset allocation decisions for clients.  He began his investment career as a Portfolio Strategist in the quantitative equity group at Bankers Trust Company, where Sam was responsible for consulting with clients on investment strategy in addition to his portfolio management and product development responsibilities.

Sam earned both his M.B.A. in finance and B.S. from Boston University.
