Addressing the potential impact of inflation is \u201ca tricky conversation,\u201d said Ross Bremen, a partner at Boston-based investment consulting firm NEPC LLC, citing the performance of commodities. \u201cYou don\u2019t want sponsors making decisions based on short-term market movements.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among NEPC\u2019s 142 DC clients, one-third offer a stand-alone TIPS fund and 15% offer a REIT fund. \u201cWe haven\u2019t seen a lot of movement over time\u201d regarding sponsors offering these funds, Mr. Bremen said.<\/p>\n

If sponsors want to change their lineups to offer more fixed income, \u201cTIPS is a choice,\u201d said Mr. Bremen, adding the warning that \u201cTIPS isn\u2019t a magic bullet.\u201d TIPS fund returns aren\u2019t guaranteed and the performance can be volatile, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEquities do a pretty good job of addressing inflation\u201d for the investment lineups of DC sponsors, Mr. Bremen added. \u201cWhen they see equities\u2019 performance over time correlated with inflation, they don\u2019t change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although sponsors have added stand-alone inflation-protection investments, participants\u2019 response remains muted.<\/p>\n
