At NEPC, we believe that one of the most important parts of a consultant's role is to identify managers that can meet a fund's objectives. Our role is to canvas the investment community to find the best managers and track them on a regular basis. Before beginning a manager search, we document the reasons for the search, relying most heavily on the structural guidelines and policy statements for direction and overall fit within the fund.
Our search criteria are specific to a client's needs, objectives and sensitivities. NEPC uses a variety of internal systems and databases in its proprietary manager search process, including our ICC database, the eVestment Alliance (eA) database, Morningstar, and StyleAdvisor.
NEPC has established a set of minimum internal criteria for each asset class. We gather data internally from our proprietary ICC Universe and externally from the eVestment Alliance (eA) database to identify those managers that meet our internal parameters. The eA platform allows our analysts to conduct on-line manager comparisons, research and electronically export the manager product data into NEPC's proprietary performance analytic system called PASS (Performance Analytics Statistical Software). PASS allows our research analysts to validate and compare investment returns across the full spectrum of investment styles, and to isolate and examine each manager's excess return stream.
In addition, NEPC maintains an internal database which houses all of our Due Diligence data, including our one-on-one manager meeting write-ups, investment thesis, and key historical data regarding products, organizational changes and our own 48-hour notification letters. We meet with members of the investment management community on a regular basis. Our investment manager research staff is trained to review managers objectively and dispassionately. We assess a firm's philosophy and process, looking for repeatability and consistency. We review the investment management staff and its commitment to the firm and the product.
